Enrichment Activities

Please check the upcoming events feed for both regularly scheduled and special events.  Otherwise regularly scheduled activities may not be meeting for various reasons, including school vacations, special events, or teacher unavailability.

Enrichment activities are offered at the HSAP center in the Theodore Roosevelt Education Center (TREC) unless otherwise noted.

Elementary-Aged Students [Grades K-6]

Discovery Days.  Regularly scheduled science events for students in grades K-3 and 4-6.  K-3 students meet two Wednesdays per month from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. 4-6 grade students meet two Fridays per month from 1:30-3:00 pm. Space is limited, please RSVP.

Maker Mondays. Meets on Mondays.  Whether no-tech/low-tech or high-tech projects, students have an opportunity to work alone or collaborate with friends to design, fail, and revise while unleashing their creativity to “make” things.  The Wonder Club meets one of the Monday per month, and students have the opportunity to work with Dash & Dot (robots) to complete challenges.  A previous challenge was to program Dash successfully go through a maze.  Watch the ICHSAP calendar for upcoming Wonder Club challenges. Space is limited, please RSVP.

Techie Tuesdays. Meets two Tuesdays each month. This is a BYOD (“bring your own device”) event. Each child should bring his or her own, fully-charged device. Activities will include digital photography, movie making, and learning to use specific apps, as well as an ongoing conversation about digital citizenship. Space is limited, please RSVP.

Field trips. There are several field trips throughout the year. Field trips in past years have included hiking, roller skating, and ice skating events, and visits to museums, School of the Wild, KCRG, and theater productions. Keep an eye on the ICHSAP calendar and the news blog as field trips are added to the schedule throughout the school year.

Reading Buddies.  Students K-12 meet monthly to read together.

Exploring German.  Students explore the German language and culture through singing, dancing, playing, crafting, cooking & eating!

Writing Lab: Postcrossing Club.  Meets monthly.  This writing lab focuses on writing postcards to people all around the world. This is a “postcard exchange project that invites everyone to send and receive postcards from random places in the world.” All of the postcards we receive from around the world will be displayed at ICHSAP.

Art.

FitKids.

Authors and Books Club. A book club for students in grades 4-6. Each month we’ll read a selected book from the list of Iowa Children’s Choice Awards (the title and author will be mentioned on the calendar each month). The ABClub will meet once each month to discuss the book and work on a related activity. Please RSVP.

Iowa History Club. A history program for students in grades 4-12 based on the University of Iowa Press book Iowa Past to Present: The People and The Prairie. The Iowa History Club will meet one Tuesday afternoon per month. [This activity is offered once every three years and was last offered during the 2014-2015 school year.]

Sewcial Threads.  A regular event for students in grades K-3 and 4-6 to learn and practice the art of textiles.

World Awareness. Families take turns preparing presentations on other cultures, then meet once a month to share their knowledge of that culture.

Teens! [Grades 7-12]

Edgenuity Online Classes.

Movie Night. Meet one evening per month to learn the history of movie-making and watch a flick together!

Workplace Learning Connection. The ICHSAP works with WLC to give teens opportunities to research and participate in workplace environments through career days, mock interviews, job shadows and internships. Let HSAP know if you are interested in WLC.

Coffee Hour.  Parents enjoy coffee and conversation.  Topics vary.
